It's hard to tell what is at the bottom of it all. Sheer stupidity maybe, frustration probably, but really, where does it all come from? Is it the weather? Riots only happen in summer in England, most of the time the weather is too bad for people to bother. Maybe it's a cry of joy, we are out, we have nothing to do, no future, let's go break things, beat up people, kill and steal. This particular anarchy hasn't happened over night, by mistake, spontaneously. It's the result of a long policy on immigration, of the complexes of a nation that has exploited the world and now wants to do good by accepting anyone on its shores offering them, a sponsored, tax paid, future. Its about helping those in "need" while making it increasingly difficult for those who actually want to work, to do so. It's about broken families, laws that enable children to convict their parents, lack of faith and spiritual practice, Thatcherism and the cult of shopping. It's about a country trying to be like America and loosing itself on the way. It's about Europe, it's about world tensions in general. It's about not being grateful or being taught to be so. It's about lack of respect for your elders, for the concepts of God, religion, love, trust, friendship. It's about spending all your time on your phone chatting to your "friends" while never speaking to your next door neighbour. It's about a lot of things and about nothing, like boredom, anger, lack of sleep, caffeine and drug fuelled nights. Lack of sports, purpose, it's about I want to change everything now, immediately and I don't know why or how to do it. It's about infantilism, wanting something and doing nothing for it. It's about the cult of not suffering. Nobody wants to suffer, and who should? I understand that. But without sacrifice and faith, you cannot get anything on this planet, and no matter what "fame" television shows are cynically trying to prove, the deeper the sacrifice and faith, the greater the return. If you don't work hard and long at something, you don't get proportionate returns. The "I" generations is faced with a gigantic dilemma: you, I , don't matter. Did you hear that? Something else does. You are being conditioned all your life to focus on yourself, your rights, your destiny, but nobody speaks about "else". Nobody teaches that "you" doesn't exist, it's a fabrication of your mind. Nobody teaches you about consciousness, about what lies behind the "I", and what's most important is that your life is an illusion you create. The gangs of youths wrecking London, Manchester, Liverpool and countless other British cities are doing it because they think they matter. Actually, deep inside they feel they don't. And the less they feel they matter, the more they want to prove they do. They want to justify the 'I' by destruction and violence because for them, seeing it on television, reading about it in the news makes them feel they exist, they are real. We can all think their actions are stupid, but what are we teaching them in schools? What society is telling them? There's winners and losers, their's "I's" and nobody's. How do you know that the fat, balding forty eight year old man with a skin condition and a ratty pony tail working as a cashier in Asda isn't a heart-breaking poet? He certainly has the experience to be one. And how do you know that everyone isn't trying their best with what they have? With what life throws at them? We are all in the same boat, judging each other doesn't help anyone. Doing something changes the world, but doing what? Perpetuating the cult of 'I" will never allow you to discover the amazing talents and stories of people surrounding you. It will never allow you to live a life of wonder, excitement, love and discovery. Isn't THAT stupid?
